I played through it as my first Xbox 360 title purchased (yeah, I got the bundle, so my HD says Final Fantasy XIII) and as I dragged my aspirations through several long chapters to get to where the main part of Final Fantasy lays: wide-open space limited only by your progress in leveling and lack of a means to travel. Sure, what you could do with that space differed from game to game, whether it was to level up, level your materia, draw for rare magic, level up your weaponry, find new spheres or whatever drove the player away from advancing the plot. But in XIII, you didn’t get that opportunity until Gran Pulse. Sure, the combat was awesome, the character design was amazing, and though I still find myself wrenching my teeth at the thought of basically all of Hope’s dialogue, the characters were a welcome change of pace (Sazh is still the man!). From Gran Pulse there was only 3 chapters left of the story. During the earlier chapters, you had a set path to go to with little wandering to do. Luckily, Final Fantasy XIII-2 seeks to change that for a fresh experience, with a story tying two sisters together in the aftermath of XIII.

Final Fantasy XIII-2’s plot begins three years after (spoiler) Fang and Vanille fuse into Ragnarok and crystallize both themselves and Cocoon into a pillar to prevent the fall of Cocoon onto Gran Pulse. With their L’Cie marks removed upon waking up from crystal sleep, they find that Serah was also freed from crystal sleep as well, which was their goal throughout the first game. Unfortunately, the battle with Orphan causes a tear in time and space that displaces Lightning into an entirely new dimension, causing the fellow party members to believe that she sacrificed herself alongside Fang and Vanille. Only Serah believes Lightning is still alive, and three years to the event when monsters attack New Bodham, she decides to leave New Bodham to find Lightning with the help of a mysterious resident of Gran Pulse, Noel, and a Moogle companion Mog, who can read the entry points of the monsters breaking through the dimensional barrier.

Serah, being the sister of Lightning and the girlfriend of Snow, is somewhat believably honed in battle, but by playing the first game, you wouldn’t have an idea of what her weapon would be, would you? Believe it or not, her weapon is Mog. The Moogle can transform into weaponry, which two forms have so far been a sword and a bow. Noel is a denizen of a future where he is the only human alive in Gran Pulse, and came through the weak barriers to put a stop to that future before it starts, and it has something to do with Lightning. He uses dual swords that can configure together to form a larger one. These are your two playable characters for Final Fantasy XIII-2. But wait, Rey, there is only two? Final Fantasy XIII had Lightning, Sazh, Snow, Hope, Fang, and Vanille. Trailers do show that Lightning has playablechapters in the story too, so is she going to be the third? Why do we only get two?

Well, sir, you don’t. You do have other playable units besides Noel and Serah on your path to find Lightning, who has to fend for herself in the new world she was thrust in. These units are actual fiends you run into throughout your travels. As you fight fiends, you’ll collect gems filled with their essence. You can equip these gems to summon fiends to your side that you can level up like any other party member. Though I am not too sure, they all come with their own Paradigm status. Because Noel and Serah are only two members and can’t cover all of the Paradigm combinations that could work towards defeating an enemy easily, these fiends have their own Paradigm roles they fill on your team, in case you need a Sentinel, Ravager, or Medic on your side while Serah and Noel play attacking roles. Any normally occurring fiend can be used as your third party member, and you can switch into a whole new one (but they retain the same health) through Paradigm Shifting if you need a new attack option. In the demo I played, I had a Feral Behemoth and a Flan. The Feral Behemoth was a Commando, while the Flan was a Ravager. The PR rep helping me through the demo told me I could also find a Cactaur somewhere during the demo, but I couldn’t find one to beat into submission. He did tell me though, that as a special pre-order bonus for FFXIII-2, you can download the use of Omega, a high-level fiend, to join your squad. Each fiend has a synchronicity bar beside their health. This labels how well they are working beside Noel and Serah. When it gets full, you can tap into the power of the Feral Link to activate their special move, which depending on the fiend, can help you reach Stagger on a creature a lot quicker or deal a massive amount of damage. While traveling through the map, you might experience a paradox on the map that needs to be fixed to continue the quest. These anomalies can only be fixed by traversing the barrier between the dimensions through a walking puzzle where the platforms can only be stepped on once. You will also find that all of the citizens of the town you go into are fully voiced, and even some have side-quests you can undertake to gain new items and run into potentially rare creatures.

As a different take on the story prior, FFXIII-2 promises to have multiple endings and dialogue branches that will make for a unique game experience for anyone’s first few run-throughs. The dialogue branches, called Live Triggers, don’t alter the story immensely, but is meant to be used to engage the player to have more personality with their responses. If you really don’t like the person you are talking to, sometimes you just need to choose what to say rather than let a story’s script tell you what you meant to say. The replies change each time you play the game, so as you make run-throughs, you will run into a variety of answers to conversation points. The story-altering system is called Historia Crux. During your travels, you will run into weak points in the space-time continuum that will allow Serah and Noel to travel years into the past or future. Changes made in these gates will reverberate throughout the time stream, affecting your present in a myriad of ways that have yet to be revealed through trailers. This is the feature that engages me the most about Final Fantasy XIII-2, in that going through time periods could dramatically alter what you find and what you can do, and it makes playing through the game more than once a feasible option rather than a choice that can be ignored.

All in all, I think Final Fantasy XIII-2 can transcend the two big stigmas that hold it back in pubic eyes: 1.) the number 2 at the end of it, causing some fans to bemuse how much they didn’t enjoy X-2 (I loved it) and 2.) It being Final Fantasy XIII’s sequel. XIII felt so foreign that it divided the fans of Final Fantasy. It felt less like a JRPG to me, which was the reason why I enjoyed the prospect of at least playing it when I got it. Lest I was sorely disappointed, but I feel XIII-2 can transcend those stigmas and be a successful title that finally answers the question the first one asked “Is Lightning happy?”
