RETRACTION: Hey guys, Rey here…I *$&#’d up. Overzealous, I thought the Mike at the demo was Mike Zaimont, but it was in fact Michael Apoyan, known in the tournament circles as Master Chibi. Mike Z was in L.A. working on the game, which is definitely coming out “early” 2012 (as early as feasibly possible is what they said). The article below this retraction is edited to fix this error, and I am sorry to all for my misgivings. I forgot to ask, I was introduced to him as Mike, I jumped the gun, and I apologize.

I might have already covered how much I want to play this game, and how much I want this game to succeed. You guys know how much of a fighting game guru I can be, and to that end, I follow a lot of them ever since 2009 gave us the revival of the fighting game tournament scene in the public eye. Mind you, not a lot of fighting games have escaped my joystick, hell, I’ve even dabbled in MUGEN for a time, but never before have I seen such a digital love letter be delivered to the fighting game genre. 8 diverse ladies make a perfect envelope to the fusion of game system that makes up the love letter. The game I am talking about is Skullgirls.

I was blessed to have the opportunity to try the game out side by side with a tournament-level player in Michael Apoyan (Master Chibi to the tournament community, an excellent Melty Blood player, if you ask me), and standing side by side with him it wasn’t hard to straight nerd out about the game references abound in this game, since both of us were fighting game enthusiasts. Both of us had comparisons to share about the fighting system of the game as we were going about it, dropping things on our heads as Peacock. It is (up to 3) vs. (up to 3) fighting. What this means is, you can choose just 1 girl for your side, versus 2 or 3 of your opponents’ combatants. The power levels for the girls are adjusted based on a inner handicap system for “unfair” battles. So a battle between you and 3 fighters can feasibly still be one despite the fact they have the benefit of assists. This balance was previously seen in Capcom vs. SNK 2’s reworked Ratio system. The only difference between CvS2 and Skullgirls balance system is the ratio doesn’t equal a set value. A 2 vs. 3 match will not have a stronger opponent on the 3-player team, they are equal strength to each other but weaker than their opponents, but not by too much. When you choose a character, you are approached with a window to choose one of their assists. One of the buttons intrigued me; it showed a fight stick in a circle. I know it wasn’t a move, and Master Chibi clarified that it was the custom input button Skullgirls was toting. You can choose custom assists for your partners, by inputting a motion and a button on your controller. While this could be a move on their movelist, you can also input a specific normal attack that they have that you can apply into another character’s combo. Also, as Master Chibi pointed out to me, you can also have your assist character block for you by holding back as your custom input. Having your assist character block for you gives you the chance to open your opponent up while they attack by jumping over your assist. Unfortunately, since I was new to the game, not knowing the movelists of the characters meant that my attempt to make an assist was only a jab. For a good thirty minutes, I was complete suckville in regards to assisting.

After picking the characters and stage, you are thrust into the battle to the sounds of esteemed musical engineer Michiru Yamane, whose musical talents have graced Konami titles for years. It’s at this point where I get adjusted to the controls. It is a 6-button fighter, with levels of punches and kicks going from Low to Medium to Heavy. Throwing is done with the LP and LK buttons, while tagging is done by pressing the Mediums for the first partner and Heavies for the second partner. To call assists, you press LP+MK or LK+MP for the first partner, and MP+HK or MK+HP for the second partner. This presents a nice fusion of Street Fighter and Marvel vs. Capcom’s controls. Some characters have different means of combos, but the combo system is also a fusion of Darkstalkers Hunter series of combos (LP,LK,MP,MK, HP,HK in varying orders) and Guilty Gear’s classic Gatling combos, along with Guilty Gear’s launcher-based combos. Supers are done Vs. Series style, by doing one motion and two buttons, unless the movelist alters it somewhat. To give a sense of alternate super combo motions, to do Peacock’s Level 3 super combo, you need to input a quarter circle motion back and two buttons during the beginning frames of her throw. A unique addition to the fighting system is the Infinite Detection system. The fighting engine is constantly reading your inputs mid-combo, and if it senses the same string is occurring too often, the hitsparks go from yellow to red. When they are red, the opponent can press a button to escape the combo and push the opponent back without any cost of meter or anything. This system also contains snapbacks, push guards that actually severely push back an opponent, and delayed super combos that let you tag your partner in mid-super to continue with their own.

The build contained 5 out of the promised 8 characters in the roster. The sixth character, Painwheel, was pictured on a fight stick in the booth, but unfortunately, was not playable, and the only details of her are an exclusive article on Shoryuken.com. The characters available on the show floor were:

Filia & Samson:

A normal schoolgirl who woke up one morning with a parasitic entity on her head and no memories of her ever receiving it. Its name is Samson, and its vices drive her crazy, but she needs to learn how to work with it to piece together her memories. Samson can wrap around her to form a razor edged ball, form its own mouth, and can belch out a damaging projectile into the air.

Cerebella & Vice-Versa

A circus performer for the mafia-fueled Cirque des Cartes, Cerebella is the only one who can use the Living Weapon, Vice-Versa, a pair of arms coming out from her hat. It can shapeshift to form horns and spikes, can grab the opponent while Cerebella attacks, and can do some serious damage up close. It even has Potemkin’s Finger Bullets from Guilty Gear. It can even pound the opponent into putty as she casually skips through the level. She has some very viable assets that a lot of the players on the floor enjoyed.

Peacock:

The source of most of the visual gags in the game, she is a walking source of funny items and weaponry that seasoned gamers will love watching but will probably hate experiencing. A normal girl named Patricia, she was mutiliated by slave traders and found by the Anti-Skullgirl Labs and installed with an absurd amounts of biomechanical weaponry. The weapons cannot fix her mind, leaving her driven to cause as much pain for others that will please her. She is the preferred zoning character with a full-range projectile super, yet weirdly enough a Level 3 grab.

Parasoul:

The princess of the Canopy Kingdom and leader of the elite military unit, the Black Egrets. Having seen the horror of the Skullgirl first hand, she uses the forces of the Black Egrets to protect her country and her family from its own worst enemy: her mother. She fights using the napalm-throwing umbrella Krieg and the power of the Black Egrets, of whom can absorb projectiles, grab the opponent from a motorcycle, and to grab the opponent for a free hit. All she needs is an opening to lay a massive beatdown, and her zoning and personal assists makes her a dangerous opponent in the right hands.

Ms. Fortune:

Formerly a member of the Fishbone Gang, she and her band of thieves tried to steal the fabled Life Gem from the Medici crime family and got killed for it, but before she could die, she swallowed the gem. Cursed with unlife despite being cut to ribbons, she can detach her head at will to be an asset to pin the opponent down. With your head detached, you can attack the opponent with the head with your heavy buttons, but the opponent can hit the head for half damage with any move that can hit it. With her backup sword, she can cut the opponent to ribbons, or knock her head to the opponent like a golf ball. Her Level 3 is just as tricky as her fighting style, spawning her wherever her head happens to be at that point.

When I discussed future DLC content if the game receives the right amount of success, Master Chibi couldn’t say much given that they haven’t signed the contract for future DLC releases, of which I only found out by talking to one of the guys behind the scenes of the game. Skullgirls will be released early 2012 as a downloadable title for Xbox Live and the Playstation Network. I implore you to let these girls into your life, not just for the fact they are hot or quirky or interesting. I implore you to because there is a lot to be said about a new fighting game series jumping into the ring amongst the big boys coming back into the picture. This has all the potential in the world to be a tournament-level fighter we could all see at Evolution. I’m calling it here.
