If there is one thing you can take away from the experience of playing games celebrating anniversaries, it’s that the game will sometimes reward you for your nostalgia. Whether it’s the teamwork of Kirby harkening back to Kirby Super Star, or the familiarity of the map of which you are in Halo: Anniversary Edition bringing you back to when combat evolved, you feel like the developers are rewarding you for being such a loyal and loving fan. Storied series young and old, I feel, repay the player with knowing the history of the series so very well, you feel it was money very well spent. That’s my first impression on Sonic Generations having gone through the game, and though I have small gripes about it, overall I feel honored to have been a part of Sonic’s 25^th Anniversary by playing this game.

Gameplay

Sonic Generations features the ability to play as both the portly protagonist of the Genesis era of Sonic as well as the extreme sports-like feel of the modern age Sonic of the Dreamcast and on era. You play as the classic Sonic in the classic Sonic 2 playstyle of left-to-right (or vice-versa) platforming featuring callbacks to various things that made the Genesis games such endearing classics, like underwater levels, swing platforms, spikes, collapsing platforms, and the ever-present springs. The modern Sonic features the revamped Hedgehog Engine present in Sonic Unleashed’s day levels and Sonic Colours valued gameplay of high-speed 3D running with trick-based aerial tricks and homing attacks we’ve grown familiar with from Sonic Adventure. You can equip skills to either Sonic, as many abilities that reach a value of 100. These abilities range from a complete stop when you press the opposite direction, adjusting the rings you keep when you get hit or Sonic-specific equips like classic Sonic’s shields of varying types or modern Sonic’s Boost Gauge level up.

The worlds scattered through time and space in Sonic’s world is divided by eras of Sonic’s history. The ‘Genesis era’ of levels are Green Hill Zone (Sonic 1), Chemical Plant Zone (Sonic 2), and Sky Sanctuary Zone (Sonic and Knuckles). The ‘Dreamcast Era’ (though misnamed) contains Speed Highway (Sonic Adventure), City Escape (Sonic Adventure 2), and Seaside Hill (Sonic Heroes, a GC, Xbox, and PS2 game). Finally, the ‘Modern Era’ contains Crisis City (Sonic 2k6), Rooftop Run (Sonic Unleashed), and Planet Wisp (Sonic Colours). Though a good portion of the levels spoken of were run through by the modern Sonic, the classic Sonic has his own unique experiences in the worlds he visits. Viewing City Escape on a 2D perspective is a unique way to convey the roads and buildings, and a unique way the truck can chase you on this level. On the flip side, modern Sonic transforms your viewpoint on the classic levels. For example, you have no idea how wide the roads are in Chemical Plant until you run through them as modern Sonic and see you can run a three-lane highway through the chemical plant. These unique looks at the past and present clashing are just two examples of the fun level design present in this game. It rewards your nostalgia by giving you plenty of visual nods to the past while revising what we loved about it, like an incredible cinematic-like sequence with crumbling towers in Sky Sanctuary that harkens back to the original Sonic and Knuckles level. Along with this comes the things about the past I personally didn’t enjoy, like platforms you have to navigate by running in place in Sky Sanctuary, and water levels in Chemical Plant and Seaside Hill. Though, I didn’t have any issues at all with Crisis City, I don’t know what the other reviewers’ problems were.

You access the worlds via a white void between time and space, where the worlds have lost their color. In this world, everything is sorted in a 2D setup with platforming encouraged to gain access to challenge levels above the world of which they are affiliated with. Beating each act (2 Acts, one for each Sonic), and beating the 5 challenges as both Sonics (totaling 10 challenges per world, with each challenge changing based on what Sonic is currently traveling), restores the full color of that world. The challenges are unlocked when the era’s zones are completed, and you need to complete one challenge through each zone to gain the boss key to challenge the boss. Beating each era’s zone also unlocks the Rival Battle of the era, with a Chaos Emerald up for grabs. These battles were quite fun in my opinion, with one being a revision of a classic battle, another being an entirely new way to view that battle, and another being a lot more exciting than that the boss battle they were harkening back to. I’ll let you guess which opponents I was referring to. As for the bosses, there is one from every era that changes up a key feature about the battle to make it a more refreshing battle in the long run. You will steadily enjoy the changes, since it will feel like a new battle and not just plopped in for the sake of nostalgia. The usual find-seven-Emeralds-to-truly-finish-the-game part is replaced by just earning the Emeralds through boss battles, and unlocks the final boss, and the ending boss is just a battle, which made me kinda sad. My favorite Sonic games of the modern era were Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Heroes, and when you earned the Emeralds or beat all of the story modes, there was a last chapter that was thrilling to go to, like Metal Overlord or Cannons’ Core in Sonic Adventure 2. There was none of that here, just a battle using both Sonics at Super Sonic level in the typical steer-your-invincible-character-here-while-dodging-debris-and-rockets. The only real problem is the lack of rings, which you can remedy if you know what you are doing. Also worth noting, you can unlock the original Sonic the Hedgehog in the game by finding the Genesis controller in the overworld, so you can delve back into the first foray against Dr. Robotnik.

Sound

Oh my god the music. Lemme start this part by mentioning that the Sonic Generations soundtrack is coming out in January, and it is worth at least 53 dollars. I intend to buy this soundtrack because Sonic Generations basically opened the musical vault of all things Sonic. If a situation calls for a track you would imagine would play, it will play. In a challenge level racing one of your buddies? Do you think Super Sonic Racing from Sonic R would play? A remix of it does. Going through the Skill Shop to modify your Sonic in a menu? The Level Select theme from Sonic 2 plays as you do. Standing in front of the boss gate? Depending on what era you are in, that era’s boss theme will trigger your nostalgia. For the Genesis era, the Sonic 1 Boss Theme will play, but for Dreamcast, an instrumental of Open your Heart will play. Depending on your era, even the Invincibility and Super Speed theme differs. Each era has a different remix of that zone’s music based on what Sonic you are using. Classic Sonic is more based on the instrumentals of the song and sound like it’s done on keyboards and computer-based programs, like a 16-bit song. The modern Sonic songs are based on more rock-based instruments, and is usually sped-up easily when Sonic hits boost. You can also unlock, via red rings or ringing bells of completed challenging, music tracks you can have play over the songs of the level, varying from Emerald Hill or Mushroom Hill in case you want to replace Green Hill’s theme with another Sonic game’s first level theme, or you can replace the song of the level with Sonic’s theme from Sonic Adventure 1. I have yet to unlock every song in the game, but there is definitely enough music to reward any Sonic music fan’s nostalgia.

Controls

Despite the two different playstyles of the Sonics, controls couldn’t be any simpler given that one of the Sonics is from a game where you only needed one button. Classic players, though, will reach a small problem because you don’t spindash by crouching and pressing a button. It is done by pressing the leftmost button in the diamond (X for Xbox, Square for PS3). Having a dedicated spindash button might feel like a cop-out, but it is good if you need to cancel your momentum before you crash into something of which you didn’t want to. Jump is on A, while the Y button is reserved for specific actions. In challenges, you might require the aid of a friend, like summoning Tails to help you float to your goal, so you can press Y to call on him. In regular missions though, this is the button you would use to use your skills, like Aqua Shield and the like. B lets you crouch down to duck under gaps that you wouldn’t fit under normally, but you can also crouch with the stick if you must. For modern Sonic, X is the Boost button, which is controlled by a meter on the bottom that grows when you collect rings or destroy enemies. Pressing A in the air while you have a target lets you homing dash, and pressing B lets you slide along the floor under gaps you couldn’t fit before. The left and right bumper allow you to quickly move to the side left and right while running to avoid walls, enemies, and spikes and move quickly into a row of rings. Pressing Y at prompts also works like classic Sonic, but you can also Light Speed Dash by pressing Y at a specifically-glowing row of rings.

Graphics

The game levels look beautiful in their own contemporary way, with no glaring visual flaws that really hurt me. Even turning on the tutorials and the danger signs, they don’t really take up any real estate on the screen that would distract from your ability to run through the level. I am even impressed they could take the visual aesthetics of the classic Sonic levels and make them work with modern engines without visual dissonance. It’s quite refreshing to see the subdued colorings of Chemical Plant be balanced by a good looking background as you make your run throughs, and the water isn’t too purple to distort your ability to discern where you are going and where the ground might be if you need to make a leap in the water.

Multiplayer

This is a single-player game, though there is an online element if you want to compare high scores and times. You can even activate live recording to verify you had that score with visual proof, rather than the hackers who have their scores as high as humanly possible while still having only beat the level in 5 seconds.
